Well whether it’s losing my primary job source in Twitter – probably 90%+ of my jobs over the past decade have been through Twitter – or just the time of year it’s slow going finding a gig this time round. Oddly this is probably the first time I’ve looked where I’m not at all choosy. I just want to build some apps (web apps preferably). 😎 Anyway, why would you want to hire me? I’m a web developer with over 25 years of experience (yes I’ve been around since Forms were *new*). In my early career I went from being a psychologist to working in the US for Microsoft corp. on the product I’d started using 6 years earlier, ASP.NET. Since then I’ve been remote working for a BUNCH of customers from massive corps like Dell though dozens of small startups and I’ve build hundreds of web apps, ASP.NET, Javascript and in my earlier days a whole bunch (PHP, C, Perl, Java – I was a SCJE for a few years!). Anyway I am BORED so if you’re looking for an INCREDIBLE remote .net developer to help bring an idea to a real product people will flock to…hit me up!… Continue Reading... "Slow-motion job hunting…"

A place to put pictures
I just realised that another thing this blog gets me (back) is a place to share images. I’m by no means a professional (or even good) phiotographer but I do live in a lovely part of the world so…here’ a few sunsets from over the years… Continue Reading... "A place to put pictures"
Why I’m using WordPress…
Yes I know static blogs are all the rage, that simply dropping markdown files in a local directory can update some snazzy statically generated site hosted on some super cheap host. *I know all these things*, I wrote multiple blog applications back when that was the rage, I had one of the most popular ASP.NET blogs for about a decade (the long lanented mostlylucid. co . uk – don’t visit it’s now a redirect from some domain sniper)…but this was EASY. I had it by default when I bought this domain. I just want to post when I want and for it to be SUPER EASY (Markdown for all it’s wonders isn’t AS easy). So thank you for all the suggestions…I KNOW WordPress sucks but it’s also easy 🤷♂️ Anyway here’s a nice picture of the Isle Of Arran I took a few months ago… Continue Reading... Adventures with Mastodon
Well this has been a strangely exciting and anxiety inducing week. After 15 years (I joined in 2007) and 150000 tweets (I know, right?) I’m finally off Twitter. All my posts are deleted (though as you can see below there’s about 2000 tweets I’m ‘forbidden’ from deleting???) and I’m now on Mastodon instead. The growth there has been incredible! Thanks to Kris Nova I found a home within a day or so. Hachyderm.io is one of what Mastodon calls ‘servers’ or ‘instances’, it’s easier to think of them as communities. Each instance will have different standards and moderation, what level of disruptive users they tolerate etc…I think that’s the best thing, the scariest thing and the most off-putting thing all at the same time. It IS different to Twitter; where it was exploited workers at a massive corporate entity who moderated content (and you had no idea WHO made the decision). Now it’s people…scary, analogue, failable people…So, find your community! Sites like Fedi Tips have some fantastic information about how to get the best from Mastodon. ANYWAY…if you want to follow me on Mastodon I’m @scottgal@hachyderm.io Continue Reading... "Adventures with Mastodon"
The start of something new…
Well let’s give this a go. Along with giving up Twitter I decided to try out blogging again. Continue Reading... "The start of something new…"
